Fraunhofer IMW

The Fraunhofer Centre for International Management and Knowledge Economy (IMW) has long been at the forefront of research on fundamental transformation processes in a globalised world. Its work has focused on key trends such as the global transition to a knowledge economy, shifts in value creation, and the increasing importance of sustainable development at both regional and international levels. Recognising these as the defining challenges of the future, Fraunhofer IMW has contributed valuable insights and solutions to drive innovation and economic growth.

However, Fraunhofer IMW will cease to operate as an independent institute on 31 March 2025. Despite this structural change, its expertise and research will continue through two of its departments, which will remain active at the Leipzig location of the Fraunhofer Institute for Systems and Innovation Research (ISI). This transition ensures the continuation of key research areas, reinforcing Fraunhofer’s commitment to addressing global innovation and sustainability challenges.

Fraunhofer IMW has built a strong legacy of international collaboration, particularly in fostering knowledge exchange and innovation networks. In June 2015, ARCHES signed a Memorandum of Cooperation with Fraunhofer IMW to strengthen ties and expand joint research efforts. This partnership has been instrumental in advancing internationalisation processes in value creation and sustainable development, with an initial focus on India. Through this collaboration, ARCHES and Fraunhofer IMW have worked to enhance global innovation ecosystems, facilitate cross-border cooperation, and drive sustainable economic impact.

As Fraunhofer IMW undergoes this transition, its pioneering work will live on through its integration into Fraunhofer ISI. The continuation of its research agenda ensures that its contributions to innovation, internationalisation, and sustainability will remain influential in shaping the future of global economic and technological progress.
